Even Birds Build in the "Flood Zone"

Remember the other day when I was asking myself WHY to people continue to build in flood zones? There are so many reasons we thought of but I didn't think of the most basic reason - instinct. Is there something about us that causes us to just want to stay in a familiar place no matter how dangerous it is? If we are anything like the birds that live in my Gazebo then the answer is YES! We have lived in this house for 3 summers now and this is the THIRD summer that these birds have built a nest in the gazebo roof. A cozy place...
...see the baby bird peeking out of the nest?

The only problem is that every year we find dead baby birds on the floor of the gazebo. So I was sure they would not build there AGAIN! But they did. So when Sofi and I were having our tea party this morning we decided that they needed some help. We took some scrap fabric and made a baby bird hammock! We could hear the little babies chirping as we hung it up. Hopefully they are safe now! Mama has a couple little openings she can get into. I'll check on them later and make sure mama is coming back...

Waldorf Storytelling: The Unichronicles

Our new show this week on the Waldorf Channel is now available at:
http://waldorftv.weebly.com/storytelling.html

It is called "The Unichronicles" and is an example of what Waldorf Storytelling would look like if the figures could move themselves. I think I am safe in saying that this is the first animated knitted unicorn video ever made. LOL!

And it is just so DARNED CUTE! Sofi and I had so much fun making it that Sofi is already planning our next one. It took us the entire day but it was a fun day!

It is ten-minutes long but it has a surprise ending that is fun :)

SPOILER: Kimberly - don't watch this unless you want to know what your unicorns are going to look like when they arrive in a few days!

NOTE: Tizi...what do you think? Do you have any characters that want to join in next time?

Blessings & Health,
Kristie

Waldorf Memories

This post can now be found on our new BLOG HERE

Falling Trees and Friday the 13th

So what is the perfect handiwork project to do when rainstorms have knocked down numerous branches in your yard and it is Friday the 13th? Right! Use a saw! Make something out of wood!

(Ok, my 11-year-olds thought that was funny LOL)...

Today we made Father's Day frames from felled trees.

First we cut a slice of tree branch...

Then we sanded the slice...

Then we cut a groove in the slice...

Then we put a piece of wood in the slice

This wood can now prop up photos and makes a nice desk frame :)

We decided to put pictures of the kids sawing the wood into the frames.

Blessings & Health,

Kristie

Time Travel

Today we visited the Living History Farms in Des Moines, Iowa here and had a wonderful time! There were only a few people there and the place is so large that we didn't run into many tourists. It made the experience even more amazing. We helped the print shop owner clean up his presses...

...the kids swept the floor in the broom making shop...
...and Sunii got to make a hook in the blacksmith's shop by fanning the coals, heating the metal, pounding the metal, cooling it in water and then drilling it...
We even visited a pharmacy from the 1800s. The kind pharmacist took down various jars from the shelf and had us smell them and guess what they were.
At the end of a couple hours we had only seen a few shops (out of perhaps 40 possible places to go) and decided to head home on the covered horse-drawn wagon. We are looking forward to visiting again. They have so many opportunities for participation that you can't possibly do everything in one day. Now I just have to figure out how to get the kids to work that hard at HOME!
Hope you are enjoying your summer days!

Kristie
