I do not know how long ago this was written but I loved it! Just linked to my blog. :) I make and sell toys on etsy.com I homeschooled my 4 kids and am now a granny and just love to introduce my oldest grand daughter (2) to nature when I have a chance to see her. And I love to watch that imaginative play. :) Its not the sytle of the toy--I agree! Its the free time and the inspiration of a parent who loves nature and learning.

LOL :) I like your comment about the boys. I had such trouble with it in the book I just published that I decided to make one chapter for boys and one for girls. So in the book "The Temperaments and the Adult-Child Relationship" you read one chapter as I am talking about boys and the next chapter I am talking about girls. And this is what I love about story-telling! As you tell the story you can change the genders, the scenery and even the names according to your own child, culture, country, location and preferences ;)

LOL just yesterday afternoon I finished the dishes. Everyone was laughing at me when I came upstairs again because they'd all gone through a dish or two again and the magnet was back on my name. They all thought they had pulled a real clever one on me. I was smiling because I realized this is the first time the dishes actually "stayed done" more than an hour! YEA!!!

Beautiful post, Kristie! My older children always came up with the best ideas. Sometimes, I would give them choices of how they could show mastery (MLB drawing/writing, speech, project, etc.), or they could come up with something on their own. Turning learning into a family play where everyone writes, acts, makes costumes and props works well, too!

There's some great ideas here. We like to "play at our history" - dressing up, making special meals, acting out, and crafting. FUN seems to make a subject more memorable. Games that reinforce a concept are also a favorite of mine, since the kids pull out the games all through the year and not just when the specific topic is being taught. Drawing is especially helpful for my oldest daughter. Experiencing science is good for understanding - in nature, in the kitchen, or wherever, hands-on is the best. We also love the opportunities to go places like museums and history reenactments, then talking about what we experienced.
